Olgur

En islandais, on décline tout (quatre cas: nominatif, accusatif, génitif, datif), même les prénoms! C'est comme ça que Olgur est le nominatif pluriel de Olga, le joli pull tricoté par grand-mère Olga. Toutes ses petites-filles portent désormais Olga, tricotés par moi. Le modèle est ici.

In Icelandic, everything is declined (four cases: nominatif for subjet, accusatif for object, genitif for complement, datif) even the names. That is how Olgur is the nominatif plurial of Olga, the beautiful sweater knitted by grand-mother Olga. All her grand-daughters are wearing Olga now, all knitted by me. The pattern is here.

Moufles nordiques

Some Norwegian judges came to visit the other day and gave my husband a beautiful pair of typical handknitted Nordic mittens from Selbu. More about the tradition here.

Des juges norvégiens en visite l'autre jour ont donné à mon mari une belle paire de moufles nordiques tricotées main de Selbu. (Ici, plus d'info sur cette tradition mais c'est en anglais...)

I'm not sure when it came into fashion in Iceland but here is an Icelandic version that was given to me and that I have been using quite a lot. Even did some serious climbing and skying with them. It is knitted with lopi on much bigger needles and the thumb is very simplified: no pattern, no gusset.

Je ne suis pas sûre quand elles sont devenues populaires en Islande mais voici une paire qui m'a été donnée, inspirée de la Norvège. Je les utilise beaucoup pour de l'escalade sérieuse et des randos à ski. Elles sont tricotées en laine lopi avec des aiguilles bien plus grosses et le pouce est bien simplifié: pas de motif, pas de gousset.

Icelandic intarsia knitting: yarn management

Petite leçon: jacquard intarsia, dompter les fils

As promised, here is a little tutorial on how to manage yarn when working intarsia knitting. The two methods below are appropriate when knitting large colors blocks in intarsia. Method 1 is well known but the amount of yarn you can wind around a bobbin is limited. Method 2 requires odd material such as cereals packs and stones... It does require more attention but it is faster when it comes to interlock the yarns and it can deal with about any amount or type of yarn, even the tickest ones.

Voici, comme promis, une petite leçon de tricot ou comment de pas emmêler tous ses fils en tricotant du jacquard intarsia. Les deux méthodes ci-dessous conviennent bien pour de relativement larges blocs de couleurs. La méthode 1 est la plus connue mais la quantité de laine qu´on peut enrouler autour des poissons est limitée. Si vous avez toujours eu envie de tricoter avec des paquets de céréales et des cailloux, la méthode 2 est à essayer. Elle demande plus d´attention mais va plus vite aux croisements de couleurs et on peut utiliser des pelotes entières, même en laine épaisse.

Method 1: using bobbins (cards for yarn).

Méthode 1: avec des poissons.

• Wind yarn around the bobbins.
  Enroulez la laine autour des poissons.

• Always keep the bobbins close the needles to avoid tangling.
  Gardez toujours les poissons bien près des aiguilles pour éviter que les fils ne s´emmêlent.

Method 2: using a box and centre-pull balls.

Méthode 2: avec une boite et des pelotes à dévidage central.

• The balls are kept in a box in the order they are used. They are reorganised at each change of motif.
  Les pelotes sont rangées dans la boite dans l´ordre dans lesquel elles sont tricotées et sont réarrangées aux changements de motif.

• Home-made box: you may already own a box of the right size to hold tightly the required number of balls of yarn, but if not, simply cut the bottom of cereals boxes and attach them together with staples and/or tape.
  Boite maison: vous possédez peut-être déjà une boite qui maintiendrait l´une contre l´autre le nombre de pelotes requises par le modèle. Sinon, utilisez simplement des fonds de boites de céréales que vous attachez ensemble (avec des agraphes ou de l´adhésif).

• It’s best to weigh the balls in place to avoid them "jumping" out of the box when knitting. Home-made tip: place a small stone in a little plastic bag and put a centre-pull ball on top, secure with an elastic, not too tight, so that you can easily pull off the yarn.
  Pour éviter que les pelotes ne "sautent" de la boite à mesure que l´on tricote, on peut les lester. Mon truc à moi: une pierre au fond d´un petit sac en plastique, une pelote par-dessus et le sac fermé par un lien, pas trop serré pour pouvoir dévider la pelote facilement.

• At each colour change, the yarns are interlocked but they will untwist when working the following row. When you knit a row, RS facing, and turn your work, the already interlocked yarns will twist. Knit the WS facing row, and turn your work in the opposite direction: it will untwist the yarns. It almost feel like a little miracle. But be careful, if you turn the wrong way it will add a twist.
  A chaque changement de couleurs, les fils se croisent, mais se décroisent en travaillant le rang suivant. Travaillez le rang aller sur l´endroit en croisant les fils aux changements de couleurs. Tournez votre ouvrage: les fils se croisent encore. Travaillez le rang retour sur l´envers, en croisant les fils aux changements de couleurs. Tournez votre ouvrage dans l´autre sens: les fils sont tous décroisés. C´est comme un petit miracle. Mais attention, si vous ne tournez pas dans le bon sens, vous ajouterez un croisement et cela ne fonctionnera pas.

• Here is a good tip to remember: with RS facing, turn you work clockwise, with WS facing, turn your work counter clockwise.
  Souvenez-vous: sur l´endroit du travail, tournez dans le sens des aiguilles d´une montre, sur l´envers du travail, tournez dans le sens contraire des aiguilles d´une montre.

• Keep in mind not to add an extra twist when moving colours, especially to the right (see previous tutorial). Check regularly, at the beginning of an RS row, that every thing is in order. If not, lay work down and untwist the yarns.
  Faites attention de ne pas ajouter un croisement de plus lorsque le motif se déplace sur la droite (voir tutorial précédent).Vérifiez régulièrement, en début de rang sur l´endroit, que tout est en place. Sinon, étendez l´ouvrage à plat et décroisez les fils.

Help, I made a mistake !

Au secours, j´ai fait une erreur !

• Don´t panick, open the window and take a big breath. Lay your work flat and frog it row by row, following the color order so the strands don´t get tangled.
  Ne paniquez pas, ouvrez la fenêtre et respirez un bon coup. Étendez votre travail à plat et détricotez rang par rang en suivant bien l´ordre des couleurs pour que tout ne s´emmêle pas.

• With method 1, you will have to wind the bobbins and uninterlock them as you frog. Or cut the strands and rewind the bobbins starting at one side and working your way through the other side (so that you only deal with two tangled strands at the time, not three).
  Avec la méthode 1, vous devez décroiser les fils et réenrouler la laine autour des poissons au fur et à mesure. Ou couper les fils et réenroulez la laine en commençant sur un côté et en travaillant jusqu´à l´autre côté (ainsi vous n´avez que deux fils emmêlés à la fois, pas trois).

• With method 2, once it ´s all frogged, put stitches back onto needle, then wind the strands again on your thumb, starting close the needle, at one side of the work and working your way to the other side. Don´t pull yarn through loops.
  Avec la méthode 2, une fois détricoté, remettez les mailles sur l´aiguille, puis réenroulez les fils "sur le pouce", tout près de l´aiguille, en commençant sur un côté et en travaillant jusqu´à l´autre côté. Ne passez surtout pas la laine au travers de boucles.

My Chrismas knitting

We had a wonderful time skying. It was a real vacation, with no computer or internet connection and I didn´t work on any new designs. Rather, I picked up some super easy patterns and just relaxed. I had forgotten how pleasant it is to simply follow well written intructions... And the good thing is that I can show you what I did during this week, not like all my personnal designs which I always have to keep secret until publication !

Une semaine de ski merveilleuse. De vraies vacances, sans ordinateur, et aucun nouveau modèle sur lequel travailler. Je me suis reposée en tricotant quelques projets super faciles. J' avais presque oublié comme il est plaisant de suivre des instructions sans se poser de questions... Et puis je peux vous montrer mes ouvrages, contrairement à mes projets personnels qui sont toujours top secret avant publication !

So here is a Botanic hat by Stephen West, Christmas present for my father-in-law who joined us skying. I knitted it much shorter, just over the ears, the way he likes it to be (because he´s bold... shhhh....). I used Icelandic wool Léttlopi from Ístex, brown and grey sheep colors.

Voici donc Botanic hat par Stephen West, cadeau de Noël pour mon beau-père qui nous accompagnait. Je l´ai fait bien moins profond, au-dessus des oreilles, comme il aime porter les bonnets (parce qu´il est chauve...chut!). J´ai utilisé de la laine islandaise Léttlopi de Ístex, couleurs naturelles des moutons, brun et gris clair.

This summer I had promessed one of my nieces to knit a hat for her. She wanted to have it red, yellow, pink, violet with golden threads.

Cet été j´avais promis de tricoter à ma nièce un bonnet. Elle le voulait, rouge, jaune, rose et violet avec du doré.

I ended up knitting an Urchin beret by Ysolda, mixing together all sorts of yarns in all the required colors. Henrietta is modelling it before it was send. And here is the happy Emilie with her Christmas present.

Je me suis décidée pour le béret Urchin de Ysolda, en mélangeant des tas de fils différents dans toutes les couleurs requises par la demoiselle. Henrietta fait le modèle avant que le béret ne soit posté.
