Skóleppar Scissors Keeper

The other day, I had a wonderful surprise when receiving a package from the post: inside there was the loveliest Scissors Keeper. It was a gift from Mary Hawkins. The Skóleppar Scissors Keeper is made of two tiny inserts in shoes (meaning skóleppar in Icelandic). Mary made it up when she wanted to introduce my book to her knitting group and to her friends. Remember, Mary had already allow me to publish the pattern on my blog, here. She has now started to make lots of scissor keepers for Christmas presents, and is planning to knit a larger one as a spectacle case as well.

L´autre jour est arrivé par la poste un paquet avec dedans la plus mignonne des pochettes pour ciseaux pliants. C´était un cadeau de Mary Hawkins. La pochette est faite de deux toutes petites semelles tricotées islandaises. C´était une idée que Mary avait eu pour présenter mon livre à son groupe de tricot et ses amis. Elle m´avait alors contactée et depuis elle a tricoté pleins de petites pochettes pour Noël et travaille sur une autre, plus grande, destinée à une paire de lunettes. Souvenez-vous, Mary m´avait autorisé à publier les instructions sur mon blog, ici.

In the package, there was also the latest issue of Slipknot, the Journal of the UK Knitting and Crochet Guild, of which Mary is the editor. A nice issue all about colours. I particulary enjoyed the article by Rebecca Price and her interview of Cathy Challender, lecturer on Fashion Knitwear and Knitted textile design at the Nothingham Trent University, "Knitting the past with the present" and especially the amazing work of Ria Thomas.

In Slipknot you can also find Mary´s pattern and read a very nice review of my book (click on picture to enlarge and read).

Dans le paquet, il y avait aussi le dernier numéro de Slipknot, le magasine de UK Knitting and Crochet Guild, (Guild de Grande-Bretagne de Crochet et Tricot) duquel Mary est l´éditeur. Un numéro sur la couleur dans lequel j´ai particulièrement aimé l´article de Rebecca Price et son interview de Cathy Challender, professeur du département Mode et Tricot de l´Université de Nothingham Trent ainsi que le travail magnifique de Ria Thomas.

Oh ! La vilaine ! Elle triche ! Comme j´ai oublié de m´inscrire sur la liste la dernière fois, que le thème était le point mousse, et que j´avais fait un accessoire au point mousse, et que le thème du Trico´13 de ce mois-ci est l´accessoire.... vous voyez où je veux en venir ? Bref, je vous montre la même et une autre aussi parce que, quand même, ce n´est pas bien de tricher... pas bien du tout même... Et puis voilà, je vous montre toutes celles du mois au point où j´en suis !Le modèle ici.

Tutorial: centre-pull ball on your thumb

Petite leçon: une pelote avec dévidage central "sur le pouce"

This method doesn´t require any tool and makes very neat and easy to work with centre-pull balls. Such balls are very useful when knitting Icelandic intarsia using the yarn holder method. This will be my next tutorial. Stay tuned !

Cette méthode ne requiert aucun équipement particulier et fait de belles pelotes avec dévidage centrale faciles à dérouler. Très utile pour enrouler des écheveaux mais aussi pour tricoter de grands motifs en intarsia islandais. Ce sera l´objet de ma prochaine leçon.

Hold the yarn in your palm during the whole process.

Tenez le fil dans la paume de la main pendant tout le processus.

Wind the yarn around the thumb clockwise.
Enroulez le fil autour du pouce dans le sens des aiguilles d´une montre.

Wind 10 times.

Enroulez 10 fois.

Wind 10 times in the diagonal direction, from bottom to top.

Enroulez 10 fois dans la diagonale, du bas vers le haut.

Wind 10 times on the other diagonal, from top to bottom.

Enroulez 10 fois dans l´autre diagonale, du haut vers le bas.

Continue alternating the diagonal directions, always winding 10 times.

Be careful not to wind too tight or you won´t feel your thumb anymore !

Blanket

Cleaning my computer, I found pictures of the baby blanket from my book, that I had completely forgotten about. I kind of like them though.

I will be showing my work in Rieux -Minervois from 6-30th November. It´s a little French village in the South of France, between Narbonne and Carcassone, only one hour drive from Toulouse. The circular roman church, a quite rare construction, is worth visiting. The opening of the exhibition is 6th November at 18:00. Tricot´13 pour conjurer le mauvais sort? J´en suis ce mois d´octobre avec pour thème le point mousse ! J´étais obligée de participer... trop fastoche... point mousse en jacquard (islandais bien sûr !) et point mousse rayé, qui dit mieux ?

What a relief ! My camera was in my bag, exactely where I thought it was and where I had already be looking for at least three times... My grand-mother blamed the house fairies for things like that. In the camera where pictures of a new project I´ve been working on lately and I can show you a glimpse of it. Any idea what it may be ?

La couronne au pied du mur ?

The Icelandic crowns are back at the National Museum. There are only four now. I sew a circle of plexiglass and added a hook on the back so that they can hang on the wall. So, how much worth are they, now ?

The Crocus was a size L. I knitted a smaller size that fits me. The bow is amovable and can be replaced, for example by a satin ribbon.

Le Crocus était une taille L et trop grand pour moi. Je me suis tricotée une taille plus petite. Le noeud papillon est amovible et peut être remplacé par un ruban de satin noué par exemple.

Finally, the latest issue of Knitonthenet is on and I have a pattern in it, called Icelandic crocus. You can get it for free online. I also wrote a little article about the Icelandic knitting tradition. Enjoy !

I had been waiting for that one for quite a while and it was actually my bithday present. It ´s a book (both in Icelandic and English) about traditional patterns for textiles found in old Icelandic manuscripts (sjónabók). A collaboration between the Icelandic Handcraft Association, the National Museum of Iceland and the graphic design department of the Icelandic Academy of the Arts, it is a graphic compilation of all the patterns found in the 10 existing manuscripts, together with a CD with the totality of the patterns for designers to use. It ´s a complete delight!

Cela faisait un moment que je l´espérais et c´est en fait mon cadeau d´anniversaire. C´est un livre (en islandais et anglais) sur les motifs traditionnels islandais dessinés dans les vieux manuscripts islandais (sjónabók). Une collaboration entre l´IAssociation pour l´Artisanat Islandais , le Musée National d´Islande et le département graphique de l´Académie des Arts d´Islande, cet ouvrage est une compilation graphique de tous les motifs trouvés dans les 10 manuscipts existant. Il est accompagné d´un CD contenant tous les motifs qui peuvent être utilisés librement. C´est une splendeur !

Prjóniprjón, Halldóra Skarphépinsdóttir & Ragnheiður Eiríksdóttir, Reykjavík, 2009

This little book was published just before last Christmas. I was intrigued and wanted to give it a closer look. I would normally not purchase a knitting book for beginners, but I liked very much its enthousiasm, its hapiness and the colorful pictures as well as the way it encourages people to knit by themselves, instructions suggesting where or how to make changes and giving ideas. I happened to meet one of the cowriter, Ragnheiður, called Ragga, and there... let me just tell you that we have BIG projects together, so stay tuned !

Ce petit livre est sorti à Noël dernier. Il m´intriguait et je voulais le voir de plus près. Normalement je n´achète pas de livres de tricot pour débutants, mais j´aime beaucoup l´enthousiasme de celui-ci, ses joyeuses photos et ses couleurs. J´aime aussi la façon dont il encourage à tricoter sans filet, les instructions suggérant où et comment faire des changements et donnant des idées. Il se trouve que j´ai rencontré l´une de ses co-auteurs, Ragnheiður, appelée Ragga, et là... laissez-moi juste vous dire que nous avons de GRANDS projets ensemble. Affaire à suivre de près !

I also bought some Icelandic yarn, Lopi and Létt-lopi to knit this winter. Some 7 kilos of carded wool to make the flowers of my Felted light. And Ragga gave me sweets: Nammi yarn she´s hand dying herself, nammi meaning candy in Icelandic. Yummy !

J´ai aussi acheté de la laine islandaise, Lopi et Létt-lopi pour quelques projects hivernaux. Quelques kilos (7 !) de laine cardée pour feutrer les fleurs de mes guirlandes lumineuses. Et Ragga m´a donné des bonbons: la laine Nammi qu´elle teint elle-même, Nammi voulant dire... bonbon en islandais ! Miam !

From Iceland # 2

In North of Iceland, we stopped at the farm where I worked at the time and learned Icelandic.

Au Nord de l´Islande, nous nous sommes arrêtés dans la ferme où j´ai travaillé à l´époque et appris l´islandais.

The girls tried and tried to give milk to drink to a few lambs. They had been bottle-feeded during the spring but as much as the lambs showed an high interest in the bottle full of warm milk, adult cheeps decided they would not be approached...

Les filles ont essayé encore et encore de donner le biberon aux agneaux. Certains avaient été nourris au biberon au printemps. Les agneaux se seraient bien laissés tenter par le lait tiède mais les moutons adultes ont décidé qu´ils ne se laisseraient pas approcher...

Well, the milk was not lost for everyone !

On our way back to Reykjavík, we marvelled at the Textile Museum in Blönduós. Handed over with white gloves, you are allowed to actually touch the garments. A real treat !
En retournant sur Reykjavík, nous avons fait une halte au Musée textile de Blönduós. Les maisn gantées de blanc, il vous ait permis de toucher. Un vrai bonheur!

I always feel touched when I meet again the old knitted insoles that have inspired me...

From Iceland # 1

We had a wonderful vacation in Iceland. We spent a great deal of time in the moutains or by the sea, canoting on a highland lake and planting the tent where ever we found a spot we liked.

Nous avons passé de merveilleuses vacances en Islande. Nous avons passé la plupart de notre temps dans les montagnes ou près de la mer, canoté sur un lac intérieur et planté notre tente oú bon nous semblait.

Craft market

The annual Craft market in Hrafnagil, north Iceland, will open next Friday, 7th of Agust unt il the 10th, from 12 til19 PM.

Sur le chemin

The week-alone-at-home is coming to an end. I thought I was going to do in one week all I had not had time to do in 3 months but it was not like that... Now is time for a long summer vacation with the kids. I hope to be able to show you what I have been knitting lately...yes, yes, I do knit... even though I don´t show you much.. Happy summer holidays !

Ma semaine-seule-à-la-maison touche à sa fin et, non, je n´ai pas du tout fait en une semaine tout ce que je n´avais pas eu le temps de faire en 3 mois... Et déjà il est temps de rejoindre les files en vacances. A mon retour j´espère pouvoir vous montrer ce que j´ai tricoté dernièrement. Si, si, je tricote beaucoup même si je ne peux pas vous montrer pas grand-chose... Bonnes vacances !

While I was sick, I couldn´t not knit, but I couldn´t either think of working on one of my design, because, I said it, I couldn´t think... But I had orange Létt-lopi yarn scraps. This is how orange Otto was born. Say hello to Ysolda, Otto ! Then off to Iceland to make a new born baby smile and keep it warm with a nice scarf with Icelandic roses.

Lorsque j´étais malade, je ne pouvais pas ne pas tricoter, mais avec ma tête vide, la simple idée de travailler sur l´un de mes modèles était inimaginable... Mais j´avais des bouts de laine Létt-lopi orange. C´est comme ça qu´Otto orange est né. Dis bonjour à Ysolda, Otto ! Ensuite, en route pour l´Islande câliner un gros bébé et le tenir au chaud avec une écharpe aux roses islandaises.

New yarn: 100% recycled

Nouveau fil, 100% recyclé

My yarn sample (for testing) from La Droguerie arrived: a new yarn 100% recycled called Récup´. It´s made of fibers taken from old sweaters and industrial knit leftovers, with a good % of pure wool and coton and no chemicals. Colors are obtained by mkixing different colored fibers together. Already 3 colors available, needles 5 - 5,5 mm (US 8-9).

Il est arrivé, l´échantillon à tester du nouveau fil Récup´de La Droguerie: la bourrette de fibres 100% recyclées. Fabriquée à partir de vieux pulls usagés et de chutes de tricotages industriels, avec un bon % de pure laine et de coton, sans teinture, simplement en mélangeant les fibres colorées. Déjà 3 couleurs. Aiguilles 5 - 5,5 mm (US 8-9).

WWKIP 2009

It´s the WWKIP ( World Wide Knit in Public 2009) this week (13-30th June). To be honnest, I never quite understood what´s the big deal about knitting in public... Half of my knitting book, I knitted at the playground while the girls were having fun in the sandbox. I still do, as you can see and for me, it´s WWKP almost everyday !

C´est la semaine mondiale du tricot en public (WWKIP 2009, 13 au 30 juin). Pour être honnête, je n ´ai jamais vraiment bien compris c´était quoi le problème de tricoter en public...

D´ailleurs, j´ai tricoté la moitié de mon livre dans les jardins publics tandis que les filles trafiquaient dans le bac à sable, et je continue ! Pour moi c´est WWKIP tous les jours !

Felted lights and a bad throat

I spent the week sick in bed with a bad throat. Nothing to do with my felted lights but endless color combinations. Thanks to all of you who included my felted lights in their Etsy treasury or their Etsy shopping list.

J´ai passé la semaine au lit malade avec une bande de chats en colère dans la gorge. Aucun rapport avec mes séries lumineuses en feutre de toutes les couleurs. Un grand merci à vous tous pour m´inclure dans vos trésors Etsy ou me mettre sur vos listes d´achat Etsy.

Modèle gratuit: la pochette pour ciseaux de Mary Hawkins

My prior aim when writing my book was to preserve the old tradition of inserts that was being lost, but also to give it a new life. That´s why when, on another island, the Great Britain, Mary Hawkins of the Knitting & Crochet Guild came up with a pattern for a Scissor Keeper Sampler, as a mean of presenting the inserts to her knitting group, I thought this aim had partially been reached. And I was very glad.

Mary was so kind to share this pattern, quick and easy to realize, with us.

Le but principal de mon livre de tricot était de préserver la vieille tradition des semelles islandaises, mais surtout de lui insuffler une nouvelle vie. Aussi, lorsque sur une autre île, la Grande Bretagne, Mary Hawkins présente à son groupe de tricot de l´ Association de Tricot & Crochet (Knitting & Crochet Guild of Great Britain) les vieilles semelles sous la forme d´une pochette pour ciseaux, vite tricotée, je me dis que mon but est partiellement atteint. Pairs of folding scissors cost less than £2 in the UK. Buy these first, so you know the size you are aiming for! Mine measured 8cm folded. The Keeper is not so suitable for sharp points unless heavily felted. Use three colours of wool A, B and C. Because of the small size of this, the sample is knitted from tip to tip, and the colours are carried across the back of the work and caught in on the following row.

Front - Cast on 3 stitches any method in colour A

First row - Knit into front and back of first stitch (kfb), knit 1, purl last stitch

Second row - slip first stitch, kfb, knit 1, purl last

Third row - slip first stitch, kfb, knit 2, purl last.

Continue like this until you have 12 sts.

Keep slipping first stitches and purling last, knit straight for 8 rows, (4 garters/ridges).

Now introduce your colours: work 5A, knit 2B, work 5A for 4 rows (2 garters/ridges). Work 3A, 2B, 2C, 2B, 3A for 4 rows (2 garters/ridges). Work 5A, 2B, 5A for 4 rows (2 garters/ridges). Break off colours B and C. Work 8 rows/4 garters/ridges in colour A.

Decrease rows - slip 1, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit to last stitch and purl it.

When you get down to 4 stitches, slip 1, knit 2 together, purl last stitch. Cast off last 3 stitches.

Back - make the same, changing order of colours

Decide on the colour for the edging, and join to the piece of the other colour. Do double crochet (single crochet US) from roughly the 3 o’clock position on this piece, i.e. where the slope starts, one double crochet in every slipped stitch. When you reach the tip, place the backing underneath, wrong sides together, and crochet through both layers. When you get back to the starting position, crochet through the back piece only up to the tip. Tie a length of ribbon through one end of scissors and through a stitch at the top of the Keeper.

Une paire de ciseaux coûte moins de £2 en Grande Bretagne. Le modèle convient pour des ciseaux mesurant 8 cm repliés. La pochette ne convient pas pour des ciseaux pointus sauf à être feutrée. Utilisez 3 couleurs de laine A, B et C. Parce qu´elle est toute petite, la pochette est tricotée d´une pointe à l´autre et les fils sont laissés flottés derrière l´ouvrage puis tricotés avec au rang suivant.

Devant : Montez 3 mailles avec la couleur A.

1er rg : Tric. 2 m. dans la 1ère m. (tric. dans le devant et l´arrière de la m.), 1 m. end., dernière m. á l´env.

2ème rg : Glissez la 1ère m., tric. 2 m. dans la m. suivante, 1 m. end., dernière m. à l´env.

3ème rg : Glissez la 1ère m., tric. 2 m. dans la m. suivante, 2 m. end., dernière m. à l´env.

Continuez ainsi jusqu´à ce que vous ayez 12 m.

Tric. alors tout droit 8 rgs (= 4 rgs mousse). Tric. toujours en glissant la 1ère m. et en tric. la dernière m. à l´env.

Travaillez les couleurs : tric. 5 m. avec la couleur A, 2 m. avec la couleur B et 5 m. avec la couleur A pendant 4 rgs (= 2 rgs mousse). Ensuite 3A, 2B, 2C, 2B, 3A pendant 4 rgs (= 2 rgs mousse). puis à nouveau 5A, 2B, 5A pendant 4 rgs (= 2 rgs mousse). Couper les fils B et C. Tric. tout droit 8 rgs (= 4 rgs mousse) avec la couleur A.

Diminutions : glisser la 1ère m., 1 m. end., tric. 2 m. ens., tric. jusqu´à la dernière m. et tric la à l´env. Continuez ainsi ts les rgs jusqu´à ce qu´il reste 4 m.: glisser la 1ère m., tric. 2 m. ens., dernière m. à l´env. Rab. les 3 m. restantes.

Dos: Procédez de la même façon mais en intervertissant les couleurs.

Assemblez le devant et le dos bord à bord avec un tour crocheté de la couleur de votre choix en faisant des m. serrées dans chacune des m. glissées. Commencez à crocheter le devant de la pochette, là où la pointe commence (position 3 heures), jusqu´au sommet de la pointe. Crochetez alors le devant et le dos ensemble jusqu´au point de départ. Crochetez ensuite simplement le dos jusqu´au sommet de la pointe. Accrocher un ruban à la pointe de la pochette et l´autre bout du ruban aux ciseaux.

Rose-pattern insert knitting is worked in the same way as regular intarsia knitting but in garter stitch.
Le jacquard islandais se travaille comme le jacquard intarsia classique, mais au point mousse.

It is easier to follow the pattern when knitting in garter stitch because, on the wrong side, this is done in the same way than on the right side (you don´t have to read the chart from left to right on the wrong side).
Il est plus facile de suivre le motif au point mousse car, sur l´envers, les couleurs se tricotent comme sur l´endroit (il n´y a pas besoin de lire la charte graphique de droite à gauche sur l´envers).

Each block of color requires a separate bobbin or ball of yarn. It is a good idea to keep the bobbins close the needles to avoid tangling the yarn.
Pour chaque bloc de couleur, il faut un peloton. Il est préférable de tenir les pelotons proches des aiguilles pour éviter qu´ils ne s´emmêlent.

You can also use a plastic bag with a rubber band, a small clothes-pin or a special card.
Vous pouvez utiliser un sac plastique avec un élastique, une petite pince à linge ou un poisson à laine.

You can more simply use a loose lenght of yarn. It is a good idea to have it no longer than your arm´s lenght to avoid tangling. This is especially true with fuzzy yarns.
Vous pouvez plus simplement utiliser un fil tel quel. Il est préférable qu´il ne dépasse pas la longueur du bras pour éviter aux fils de s´emmêler, particulièrement les fils poilus.

You can join the ends together by twisting them together: split the ends in two and rubb them between your fingers with mouthwater. The excess yarn is cut away after the knitting.
Les différentes brassées peuvent être alors jointes entre elles en roulottant les bouts ensemble: séparez les brins en deux et feutrez-les entre les doigts avec un peu de salive. Les brins qui dépassent sont coupés une fois le tricot fini.

The new yarn must be on the right side of the color block to be knitted. As the pattern moves to the left, it is knitted-in (shown here on the wrong side).

When the pattern moves to the right, the yarn is left lying accross the wrong side, then knitted-in (shown here on the wrong side).

It is a good idea to knit in or darn in loose ends regularly while working. Darn ends around the blocks, in one side, then on the other other to be secure.
Il est conseillé de rentrer les fils régulièrement à mesure du travail, en passant l´aiguille d´abord dans un sens puis dans l´autre, autour des blocs de couleurs.

In some cases, in order to avoid unnecessary loose ends, begin at the center stitch and work the ends individually in both directions.
Pour certains motifs on peut limiter le nombre de fils à rentrer en prenant le fil par son milieu et en tricotant chaque bout, l´un à droite, l´autre à gauche, selon le motif.

In order to determine the lenght of yarn needed, when working a small block of color, wind the yarn as many times around the needle as the number of stitches required.
Pour savoir combien de laine il faut pour tricoter un petit bloc de couleur, enrouler le fil autant de fois qu´il y a de mailles dans ce bloc.

In some cases, it is possible to work a piece using both intarsia and Faire Isle knitting technique. For instance, the motif is knitted using intarsia technique while the main color is knitted along the whole way.
Dans certains cas, jacquard intarsia et jacquard à fils tirés (appelé aussi à fils flottants) sont travaillés ensemble. Le motif est par exemple travaillé en jacquard intarsia tandis que la couleur principale est laissée flotter tout le long de l´ouvrage.

In London, I bought two books. The knitted Odd-bod Bunch with fabulous Donna Wilson´s odd creatures now interpreted into handknit patterns. And at a bookmarket by the Thames, I found a classic after Beatrix Potter, The original Pop-up Tale of Peter Rabbit. I kinda like children books, you know...

A Londres, j´ai acquis deux livres. The knitted Odd-bod Bunch avec les drôles de créatures de Donna Wilson réinterprétées sous forme de modèles de tricot. Et dans une échope près de la Tamise, un classique de Beatrix potter, The original Pop-up Tale of Peter Rabbit. (La véritable histoire de Pierre Lapin) . J´ai un petit (gros) faible pour les livres d´enfants...

New improved website

Mon nouveau site

My new website is running and ... you are on it ! Feel free to navigate around by clicking on the top menu and left menu. Please do tell me if there ´s a link not working or anything odd. I´ll wait a liitle while for your comments and advices before I go any further and add more languages, suc as French. I still have to make adjustements to the left menu on the blog, I´m working on it. It seems easier to find top menu tutorials !

Oh, and I finally registered on Facebook... couldn´t avoid it much further...

N´hésitez surtout pas à me faire savoir s´il y a des disfonctionnements ou des bizarreries. J´attendrai quelques temps vos commentaires et conseils avant d´aller plus loin et mettre le tout dans d´autres langues, en français en particulier. Le menu gauche doit être réajusté sur le blog, c´est en cours.

My knitting material

Mon petit matériel de tricot

The bag is a giveaway from Katvig. The case is made of waxed linen from Papa pique et Maman coud. 

Le sac est un cadeau Katvig. La trousse en toile cirée vient de Papa pique et Maman coud en Bretagne.

I don´t use band needles anymore : too long and too heavy to knit with. I prefer circular needles, even when knitting back and forth. I use the Denise interchangeable needles set, very convenient, it can take the plane but first size is rather big, already a US 5.

Je n´utilise plus les longues aiguilles : je les trouve trop longues, trop lourdes, et je leur préfère les circulaires même pour tricoter en allers retours. Le set d´aiguilles interchangeables Denise est très pratique et prend l´avion, mais les aiguilles les plus fines font déjà 3,75 mm.

I keep my stash into two IKEA cases. One for the Icelandic wool, the other for the "foreign" yarns. I keep all short ends, even tiny, and use them as stuffing.

Je garde mes pelotes dans deux poches IKEA: l´une pour la laine islandaise, l´autre pour les fils "étrangers". Je conserve tous les bouts de fils, même les plus courts et m´en sert comme bourre.
