Really happy and (over) excited to be moving back home in Iceland after just a few days! We improvised a farewell dinner on the wrapping paper in the middle of the boxes.

Très contente et (sur) excitée de rentrer en Islande dans juste quelques jours! Un dernier dîner en amoureux sur le papier d'emballage au milieu des cartons.

Une bonne année de tricot qui commence!

Theodora is safe, she got some beautiful knits and much more that you will have the chance to discover all the year long. Among others things, she got this lovely scarf knitted by my second daughter, of the same name, 8 years old. Rosa and the White Cat escaped the nasty Icelandic cat as well and so did I! Sylvia my oldest daughter, 9 years old, knitted for me a lovely pair of red garter stitch mittens! The holidays were lovely and involved a lot of knitting: the girls were especially allowed to knit in the car (with bamboo short circular for safety) claiming that it kept them from being car-sick (!?). Theodora taught my brother how to knit and I finished a few projects that I can't show right now (sigh...).

Théodora est toujours vivante et s'est fait offert de merveilleux tricots et bien plus encore que vous aurez l'occasion de découvrir au cours de l'année. Parmi celles-ci cependant, cette mignonette écharpe tricotée par am cadette du même nom, 8 ans. Rosa et le Chat Blanc ne se sont pas fait dévorer non plus par l'horrible chat de Noël islandais, et moi non plus! Sylvia mon aînée, 9 ans, m'a offert cette ravissant paire de mitaines rouges! Nous avons passées d'excellentes vacances et beaucoup tricoté: les filles ont exceptionnellement eu le droit de tricoter dans la voiture (avec des aiguilles circulaires très courtes en bambou, moins dangereuses) prétextant que cela les empêchait d'avoir le mal de voiture (!?). Théodora a appris à mon frère à tricoter et j'ai fini quelques projets que je ne peux pas encore vous montrer (soupir...).

We also cut out a lot of Laufabrauð, North of Iceland traditional Icelandic thin Christmas breads, and it was a very creative year I thought!

Nous avons aussi découpé beaucoup de Laufabrauð, ces fines galettes islandaises traditionelles du Nord de l'Islande à Noël, avec cette année de vraiment jolies découpes!

Today school has started again and the snow is gone but here is a backstage picture from the photoshoot of the Beret Brynja, when it was still all white.

Aujourd'hui l'école a repris et la neige est partie mais voici une photo côté jardin de la prise de vue du Béret Brynja lorsque tout était encore blanc.

EDIT: c'est la recette de la famille, le seigle lui donne du caractère.

500 g farine blanche

200 g seigle

1 c à café de sel

1 c à café de sucre

1/2 l de lait chaud mais qui n'a pas bouilli (important)

35 g de beurre fondu

On mélange le tout pour faire une pâte un peu sèche. Elle est plus facile à abaisser en galettes fines quand elle est encore tiède. Les galettes sont découpées au couteau et piquetées avec une fourchette (très important) puis cuites dans une friture chaude et pressées dès sorties de la friture (avec un couvercle bien plat, entre des couches de papier journal et papier torchon).

Gave up my old tower PC and got myself a MAC laptop: now I can work on holidays, yeah! And play with the Photo Booth...

J'ai abandonné mon PC et sa vieille tour et je me suis offert un portable MAC: maintenant je peux travailler pendant les vacances, youpi! Et faire l'andouille avec la caméra incorporée...

My Chrismas knitting

We had a wonderful time skying. It was a real vacation, with no computer or internet connection and I didn´t work on any new designs. Rather, I picked up some super easy patterns and just relaxed. I had forgotten how pleasant it is to simply follow well written intructions... And the good thing is that I can show you what I did during this week, not like all my personnal designs which I always have to keep secret until publication !

Une semaine de ski merveilleuse. De vraies vacances, sans ordinateur, et aucun nouveau modèle sur lequel travailler. Je me suis reposée en tricotant quelques projets super faciles. J' avais presque oublié comme il est plaisant de suivre des instructions sans se poser de questions... Et puis je peux vous montrer mes ouvrages, contrairement à mes projets personnels qui sont toujours top secret avant publication !

So here is a Botanic hat by Stephen West, Christmas present for my father-in-law who joined us skying. I knitted it much shorter, just over the ears, the way he likes it to be (because he´s bold... shhhh....). I used Icelandic wool Léttlopi from Ístex, brown and grey sheep colors.

Voici donc Botanic hat par Stephen West, cadeau de Noël pour mon beau-père qui nous accompagnait. Je l´ai fait bien moins profond, au-dessus des oreilles, comme il aime porter les bonnets (parce qu´il est chauve...chut!). J´ai utilisé de la laine islandaise Léttlopi de Ístex, couleurs naturelles des moutons, brun et gris clair.

This summer I had promessed one of my nieces to knit a hat for her. She wanted to have it red, yellow, pink, violet with golden threads.

Cet été j´avais promis de tricoter à ma nièce un bonnet. Elle le voulait, rouge, jaune, rose et violet avec du doré.

I ended up knitting an Urchin beret by Ysolda, mixing together all sorts of yarns in all the required colors. Henrietta is modelling it before it was send. And here is the happy Emilie with her Christmas present.

Je me suis décidée pour le béret Urchin de Ysolda, en mélangeant des tas de fils différents dans toutes les couleurs requises par la demoiselle. Henrietta fait le modèle avant que le béret ne soit posté.

Happy new year and thank you for your comments and support. I know I rarely answer but I have a valid excuse: time is running out of my hands much faster than my yarn stash! I had been waiting for that one for quite a while and it was actually my bithday present. It ´s a book (both in Icelandic and English) about traditional patterns for textiles found in old Icelandic manuscripts (sjónabók). A collaboration between the Icelandic Handcraft Association, the National Museum of Iceland and the graphic design department of the Icelandic Academy of the Arts, it is a graphic compilation of all the patterns found in the 10 existing manuscripts, together with a CD with the totality of the patterns for designers to use. It ´s a complete delight!

Cela faisait un moment que je l´espérais et c´est en fait mon cadeau d´anniversaire. C´est un livre (en islandais et anglais) sur les motifs traditionnels islandais dessinés dans les vieux manuscripts islandais (sjónabók). Une collaboration entre l´IAssociation pour l´Artisanat Islandais , le Musée National d´Islande et le département graphique de l´Académie des Arts d´Islande, cet ouvrage est une compilation graphique de tous les motifs trouvés dans les 10 manuscipts existant. Il est accompagné d´un CD contenant tous les motifs qui peuvent être utilisés librement. C´est une splendeur !

I also bought some Icelandic yarn, Lopi and Létt-lopi to knit this winter. Some 7 kilos of carded wool to make the flowers of my Felted light.

From Iceland # 2

In North of Iceland, we stopped at the farm where I worked at the time and learned Icelandic.

Au Nord de l´Islande, nous nous sommes arrêtés dans la ferme où j´ai travaillé à l´époque et appris l´islandais.

The girls tried and tried to give milk to drink to a few lambs. They had been bottle-feeded during the spring but as much as the lambs showed an high interest in the bottle full of warm milk, adult cheeps decided they would not be approached...

Les filles ont essayé encore et encore de donner le biberon aux agneaux. Certains avaient été nourris au biberon au printemps. Les agneaux se seraient bien laissés tenter par le lait tiède mais les moutons adultes ont décidé qu´ils ne se laisseraient pas approcher...

Well, the milk was not lost for everyone !

On our way back to Reykjavík, we marvelled at the Textile Museum in Blönduós. Handed over with white gloves, you are allowed to actually touch the garments. A real treat !
En retournant sur Reykjavík, nous avons fait une halte au Musée textile de Blönduós. Les maisn gantées de blanc, il vous ait permis de toucher. Un vrai bonheur!

I always feel touched when I meet again the old knitted insoles that have inspired me...

Je me sens toujours un peu chose lorsque je revois les semelles tricotées qui m´ont inspirées...

From Iceland # 1

We had a wonderful vacation in Iceland. We spent a great deal of time in the moutains or by the sea, canoting on a highland lake and planting the tent where ever we found a spot we liked.

Nous avons passé de merveilleuses vacances en Islande. Nous avons passé la plupart de notre temps dans les montagnes ou près de la mer, canoté sur un lac intérieur et planté notre tente oú bon nous semblait.
