Trico´13

Tricot´13 pour conjurer le mauvais sort? J´en suis ce mois d´octobre avec pour thème le point mousse ! J´étais obligée de participer... trop fastoche... point mousse en jacquard (islandais bien sûr !) et point mousse rayé, qui dit mieux ?

Tricot´13 (Knit´13, every thirteenth of the month, you have to complete a knitting project to exorcise and post it). This month´s thema was garter stitch. I had to participate... intarsia in garter stitch and strips, what more?

Dis bonjour à la dame !

While I was sick, I couldn´t not knit, but I couldn´t either think of working on one of my design, because, I said it, I couldn´t think... But I had orange Létt-lopi yarn scraps. This is how orange Otto was born. Say hello to Ysolda, Otto ! Then off to Iceland to make a new born baby smile and keep it warm with a nice scarf with Icelandic roses.

Lorsque j´étais malade, je ne pouvais pas ne pas tricoter, mais avec ma tête vide, la simple idée de travailler sur l´un de mes modèles était inimaginable... Mais j´avais des bouts de laine Létt-lopi orange. C´est comme ça qu´Otto orange est né. Dis bonjour à Ysolda, Otto ! Ensuite, en route pour l´Islande câliner un gros bébé et le tenir au chaud avec une écharpe aux roses islandaises.

The worst "photo studio" ever

Mon "studio" photo : on ne fait guère pire...

Isn´t it the worst photo "studio" ever ? But at least, I finally  managed to put two scarves in my Etsy shop. I will be listing more over the next days (and try to get a model...).

Avez-vous jamais vu pire "studio" photo ? Mais au moins, j´ai enfin pu mettre deux écharpes dans ma boutique Etsy. J´en mettrai d´autres dans les jours à venir (et essaierai de trouver un modèle...).

Perfect match

Here are two scarves for Ada : one for her newborn little sister and one for her doll. My Henrietta is modelling with her doll and she would VERY much like to have the same scarf for her own doll... The pattern (Vintage scarf with Icelandic roses) is free (Ravelry download or send me an email or leave me a comment) . I simply divided all the measurements by two to get a doll size (starting by catsing on 3 sts to get an odd number).

Voici deux écharpes pour Ada : l´une pour sa petite soeur tout juste née, l´autre pour sa poupée. C´est mon Henrietta qui pose sur la photo mais elle aimerait BEAUCOUP que je tricote la même écharpe pour sa poupée à elle... Le modèle (Echarpe rétro avec des roses islandaises) est gratuit (téléchargement sur Ravelry ou envoyez-moi un email ou encore laissez un commentaire).  J´ai simplement divisé toutes les mesures en deux pour l´écharpe de poupée (en commençant par monter 3 m. pour obtenir un chiffre impair).

Everyday now, I´m sending some free scarf patterns (only one in French : don´t my compatriots knit ?). It´s a good introduction to Icelandic Color Knitting (intarsia knitting in garter stitch) as described in my book. I would like to use the opportunty to remind the copyright on this pattern : although it´s free, instructions can´t be translated, sold or given whithout my permission and most important a scarf knitted along my instructions cannot serve commercial purposes. In other words, you can´t sell scarves but, of course, you can give as many as you wish to people you love !

Tous les jours maintenant, j´envoie des modèles gratuits d´écharpe aux roses (un seul en français : ils ne tricotent pas mes compatriotes ?). C´est une bonne initiation au jacquard islandais (i.e. le jacquard intarsia au point mousse), objet de mon livre. Je voudrais profiter de l´occasion pour rappeler que ce modèle est protégé par le droit d´auteur : cela veut dire entre autres choses que, bien que gratuit, les instructions ne peuvent pas être traduites, vendues ou données sans ma permission, et surtout, qu´une écharpe tricotée selon mes instructions ne peut l´être à des fins commerciales. Vous ne pouvez pas vendre d´écharpes mais donnez-en autant que vous voulez aux êtres qui vous sont chers !

Lately, I´ve been sending quite a few free scarf patterns all over the world (not much in French, though...). When I offered the pattern for free, I wanted it to be automatically downloaded on a simple click but I encountered some technical problems (I will spare you the details). As a result, I have to activate the dowload manually, after you send me an email asking for the pattern. First I thought it was so annoying, but then after I got all your kind comments on your emails, I´m so happy with it and I want to thank you all for your support and the warm words. I know you´ve heard it before on the blogs, but it is true , it is really really great to have some feed back and encourages me to continue !

Ces derniers temps, j´ai envoyé pas mal de modèles d´écharpes gratuits un peu partout dans le monde (presque rien en français cela dit !). Lorsque j´ai offert le modèle, je voulais qu´il puisse être téléchargé automatiquement sur un simple click de votre part, mais ce n´était pas possible (je vous passe les détails techniques). Je dois donc déclencher le téléchargement manuellement, après que vous m´avez envoyé un email me le demandant. Je le trouvais assez contraignant d´abord, mais je ne le regrette pas du tout lorsque je lis tous les commentaires qui accompagnent vos emails. Merci beaucoup pour votre soutien, vos mots chaleureux et votre enthousiasme. Ca fait vraiment du bien !

Life in Iceland was not easy in the days when Icelanders wore knitted inserts in soft sheep and fish skin shoes. No colored yarn could be wasted and leftovers were highly suitable for knitting beautiful inserts decorated with roses and making life more joyful.
In the spirit of the old inserts, I set the the pattern free in Icelandic a few weeks ago, but I would like to offer it to everybody else.

La vie n´était pas facile du temps où les Islandais utilisaient encore des semelles tricotées dans leurs chaussures souples de peau de mouton ou de poisson. Les fils de couleurs ne devaient pas se perdre et tous les petits bouts de laine étaient utilisés pour tricoter de belles semelles décorées de roses qui embellissaient la vie de tous les jours.
Dans l´esprit des vieilles semelles, j´avais proposé le modèle gratuit en islandais il y a quelques semaines, mais j´ai aussi envie de l´offrir à tout le monde.

Scarf for joy and color

At the time knitted inserts were used in traditionnal Icelandic soft shoes, everyone in Iceland liked to own a pair of inserts with a rose-pattern; they brought color and joy into extremely difficult lives.

Today is the right moment to sit down, reflect on the inserts and start to knit this beautiful scarf made of yarn scrapes. It will make more than one happy and warm. You will find the instructions here. And because Iceland needs bright color and warmness right now, by solidarity, the instructions are free in Icelandic!

Aux temps passés, lorsque les Islandais utilisaient encore des semelles tricotées dans leurs chaussures souples de peau, tout le monde apréciait une belle paire de semelles ajourées de roses; elle mettaient de la joie et de la couleur dans une vie par ailleurs extrêmement rude et difficile.
Aujourd´hui, c´est le moment de se poser et de tricoter cette jolie écharpe ajourées des mêmes roses et faites de restes de laine. Elle en tiendra plus d´un au chaud, à la gorge et surtout au coeur. Vous trouverez les instructions détaillées pour ce modèle ici.
La vie est un peu difficile en ce moment en Islande, alors, par solidarité, le modèle est gratuit en islandais!

Summer holidays are coming to an end. I´ve been knititng a few more scarves in the car (when it´s Skúli who is driving!). I will put the pattern for sale on my website very soon. I will keep you updated.

Now, I´m preparing to move to a new house the day after tomorrow and am hoping to have installed the little family well enough before nest Tuesday because school starts plus I will be off to London the all week-end for the I Knit Day event the 6th of September. In the meantime I´m applying for grants for my next knitting book project while trying to make our current Icelandic guests as comfortable as possible!
