Swatch: a free pattern and yarn for a sweater to win

Knitting a swatch is something that many of us knitters are often reluctant to do but swatching doesn’t have to be boring! This colorful glasses or pencils case is in reality the swatch that ought to be made prior to starting knitting Lopi Affection, my new Icelandic lopi yoke sweater!
The Swatch will be helpful to:
- check your gauge and ensure the sweater fits perfectly. If you have more stitches per 10 cm /4”, try again with a bigger needle, and if you have less sts, with a smaller needle, until you get it just right!
- learn and practice short rows, using yarn overs, "wrapped yo" and "stranded yo" as I call them, a method I figured out to make this sweater design possible (or “univented” as EZ would put it)
- optionally to practice the Icelandic steek! (but you can knit the sweater flat or in the round)
- choose your 3 favourite colors and see how well they combine together, out of the 58 shades of Léttlopi available… and of course since you can use any suitable DK of equivalent weight it makes the possibilities absolutely endless!
- and finally you will learn the four needles bind-off!

Tomorrow I will blog on Monday about the sweater.
In the meantime, you can join the Ravelry Swatch KAL and share your colors combinations: the 2 Ravelry projects that have the most favorites within 2 weeks (until November 10th, 2013) will win enough Léttlopi yarn to make a full size adult Lopi Affection sweater! Have fun!

PS: I've already knit 14 swatches and I'm hooked! They're going to be my little Xmas gifts this year!
PSbis: did you spot Siffia's color combination, the winner of our autumn giveaway? How do you like yours: try it and swatch Swatch!

My knitting holidays, a perfect crochet steek and Autumn book giveaway!

Autumn is there - at least in Iceland - and as I am about to publish a bunch of new patterns, I'd like to share with you the projects I knit during our 2 weeks holidays in Normandy this summer. I wanted them to be really peaceful holidays, with no work involved at all, so I let all my personal projects and designs at home and knitted after two favorite designers patterns for a change!

I got the yarn during the Hiking and knitting tour with the Elves this summer: I just couldn't resist the beautiful green... and purchased 8 balls without knowing at all what I was going to do with them - I'm sure many of you know the feeling... Navia, pure wool from the Faroe: a blend of Shetland, merino and Faroe wool. Afterwards I eventually selected 2 patterns I wanted to knit but of course the gauge didn't match at all.

My first project was the lovely beret Crowning Glory from my friend Susan Crawford's book, Coronation knits (I had blogged about it previously). The yarn the pattern called for was thiner so I cast on 1/4th less sts, suppressed a few rounds and one eyelet pattern in the brim and only made 3 pattern repeats. I love love love it and I love the color!

The pretty cardigan Twigs and Willow was my second project. It's from Alana Dakos's (Never Not Knitting) book, Botanical Knits. This time the pattern called for a thicker yarn so to compensate I knitted a size bigger but followed the lengths from my size and modified the sleeves and armholes that were too narrow. The sweater is knitted into pieces and sewn but I couldn't help knitting it in the round and steeking it, as we usually do in Iceland. I found it made it easier to knit a perfectly symmetrical cable motif. Because I was on holidays and didn't have a sewing machine I used the crochet steek method and I'm very happy on how it turned out! Very clean finitions, don't you think?

I received by mistake 2 books from Alana so I'm giving away one of them! To do so, please enter a comment under this post and tell me what are your 3 favourite colors for this Autumn from the Léttlopi range (58 colors to choose from!!). You have until Thursday, October 17th, at midnight GMT and I'll be drawing the winner the following Friday!
The book is in English but Annette Petavy is distributing the French translation so should our winner be French speaking, she kindly offers the French translation PDF with the paper book!

Happy autumn!
Bel automne!

Win a free knitting tour to Iceland !

I have a hard time myself believing I'm writing this but yes, here is an opportunity to win a free knitting tour to Iceland! This amazing prize is actually the Gold Medal for the Team Icelandic Knitters participating in the Ravellenic Games (formerly known as Ravelympics) 2012 (huge knitting event on Ravelry). The tour Knitting in the Magical Icelandic night is offered by Icelandic Mountain Guides (Iceland Rovers), my partner in organizing knitting tours in Iceland. For more information and to enter the giveaway, join the Team Icelandic Knitters on Ravelry.

But in short, you have to:
- join the group Team Icelandic Knitters on Ravelry (and prior register on Ravelry if you aren't there already)
- cast on and complete a project from Hélène Magnusson's designs during the Olympics games: cast on not before July 27th, 19h30:00 GMT and complete project no later than August 12 at 11h59:59 GMT. You may swatch before the opening but you can't start the actual knitting.
- IMPORTANT: tag your project: teamisk
- post a fullsize picture of your completed project in Team Icelandic Knitters no later than 24 hours after the closing of the OG.
Please tell all your knitterly friends and also mention it on your blogs, facebook, twitter, etc... You can also let your LYS know and start a local group with a captain within the Team Icelandic Knitters.

Good luck!

I won't be much on the blog this summer because, as many of you already know, I'm moving back to Iceland after 5 years spent in Luxembourg :-) I'm moving concretely after two weeks, just after the hiking and knitting tour! See you soon!

A bientôt!

Coronation knits and a giveaway

Livre tricot vintage à gagner

EDIT: Congratulations to fabriquefantastique ! http://andrew.hedges.name/experiments/random/ chose her as our winner for Coronation Knits giveaway!!

Princess twinset
Today I feel like having a cup of tea and wearing a handkerchief! The much expected book after Susan Crawford, the Queen of Vintage Knitting herself, Coronations Knits, it out and is standing up all expectations.  It is a collection of 14 designs for men, women and children around the theme of the Coronation/Jubilee, Royalty and the personal style of a young Elizabeth from around 1947 to 1953. It starts with a bit of history, it's interesting, personal, informative, the instructions are very clearly set up. The pictures are gorgeous as usual (with a map of the Royal route in the background).  Susan had the intelligence to stick to her theme (for example the 3 colors, the crown motif), but without falling into a caricature. The result is vintage designs but still timeless that could be worn in any occasions.  She is for me the true expert of vintage knitting and you are probably all familiar with her hugely successful books, such as A stitch in time volume 1 and 2, an amazing collection of vintage knits from the 1920-1959 re-written and adapted to our modern yarns and standards.

I will draw a winner on Monday, June 25th at 10:00 AM (GMT). Good luck and if you don't win you can still try your chance as the blog tour continues with more giveaways! Otherwise, you'll just have to buy it!
