Uppercase Magazine is one of my favourite magazines of all time. Recognized for its design excellence, it sparks the imagination and inspire creativity. Its pages profile up-and-coming artist or explore emerging trends in design and creativity. Issue 19 was no exception, so imagine how happy and proud I was to see an article about me and Icelandic Handknits in it! Have a look here.

The warmest book in the world:  "Stína stórasæng"  by bestselling author Lani Yamamoto (publisher Crymogea 2013, book launch at Spark Design Space last week). It is the story of a girl who is always cold. The woolen cover designed by Víkprjónsdóttir keeps the readers warm. Stína knits a lot to keep herself warm but finds out there are other ways to keep the cold away... In the process, she shows her new friends how to knit with their fingers. Henrietta is hooked!

Le livre le plus chaud du monde:  "Stína stórasæng" par la talentueuse Lani Yamamoto (Crymogea 2013, sortie du livre à  Spark Design Space la semaine dernière). C'est l'histoire d'une petite fille qui a toujours froid. La couverture en laine créée par Víkprjónsdóttir tient les lecteurs au chaud. Stína tricote beaucoup quant à elle mais découvre qu'il y a d'autres façon d'éloigner le froid...  En chemin, elle montre à ses nouveaux amis comment tricoter avec les doigts. Henrietta adore!

Lopi Affection Icelandic sweater

Pull islandais Lopi Affection

This new Icelandic sweater is part of the Issue 06 of The Icelandic Knitter. I will be releasing more patterns little by little through out November but first let me tell you a few things about Lopi Affection.

Ce nouveau modèle fait partie de la Collection 06 de Tricoteuse d'Islande. Plus de modèles seront publiés petit à petit au cours du mois de novembre. Mais d'abord laissez-moi vous parler un peu de Lopi Affection.

Icelandic lopapeysa sweaters traditionally don't have any front or back. For the past years, I have been playing with short rows to create a scoped neckline, not by adding just a few short rows but a LOT of them! In Lopi Affection, the short rows become a design element of their own in place of the traditional stranded motif. And there are 24 of them in garter stitch!

Les pulls islandais lopapeysa n'ont traditionnellement ni devant ni derrière. Ces dernières années, j'ai usé de rangs raccourcis pour créer une encolure arrondie, en ajoutant non pas quelques rangs raccourcis mais BEAUCOUP! Dans Lopi Affection, les rangs raccourcis deviennent un élément à part entière du design, en lieu du motif en jacquard. Et il y en a 24 en tout, au point mousse!

The Icelandic lopi yoke sweater as we know it is not a very old tradition in Iceland As a matter of fact, it probably emerged in the 40-50's, gaining popularity in the 60's and becoming the emblem of Icelandic knitting in the 70's. Before that, we could find very different types of sweaters in Iceland: in the 40's one that was very popular was a dropped shoulders sweater with stripes at the front. Lopi Affection echoes that sweater and mixes together the stripes in the contemporary yoke sweater.

Le pull islandais tel que nous le connaissons aujourd'hui n'est pas une tradition très vieille en Islande. En fait, il est probablement apparu au tournant des années 40-50, devenu populaire dans les années 60 et emblématique du tricot islandais dans les années 70. Avant cela, on trouvait bien d'autres types de pulls: dans les années 40, un pull avec des emmanchures carrées et des rayures sur le devant était très populaire. Lopi Affection le rappelle et mélange ainsi ensemble des rayures dans un modèle contemporain à empiècement rond.

An idea is not enough, you have to put it to practice. The short rows stripes, although they look simple, needed a bit of technical creativity: it took a few trials to find out how to do it effectively, simply and without too much ends to darn. The result is the Swatch pattern, a free pattern that I really really recommend you to knit before you start the Lopi Affection sweater. It is made for you to learn and practice the  special "wrapped yo short rows" and "stranded yo short rows" as I called them. 

Une idée n'est pas suffisante, encore faut-il la mettre en application. Les rayures en rangs raccourcis, même si elles on l'air simples, ont demandé un peu de créativité technique de ma part: il m'a fallu plusieurs essais avant de trouver comme les tricoter d'une manière efficace mais simple et sans trop de fils à rentrer. Le résultat est le modèle Swatch, un patron gratuit mais vraiment l'échantillon que je vous recommande vivement de tricoter avant de vous lancer dans votre Lopi Affection  Il est fait pour que vous appreniez les techniques des rangs raccourcis avec "jetés enveloppés" et "jetés flottants", comme je les ai appelés.

Le modèle Swatch vous aidera aussi à visualiser vos couleurs et voir comment elles se combinent ensemble. La laine Léttlopi existe en 58 coloris: les 40 coloris du producteur Istex mais aussi plus de couleurs vives teintes spécialement pour l'Association de Tricot d'Islande. Short rows, garter stitch, stripes, Finish designer Veera Välimäki comes immediately to mind. Inspired by her lovely shawl Color Affection, I couldn't think of any other name than Lopi Affection for this sweater. So I wrote to her and asked if it was ok and she was absolutely fine with it.

Des rangs raccourcis, du point mousse, des rayures, la créatrice finlandaise Veera Välimäki vient à l'esprit. Inspiré par son ravissant châle Color Affection, je n'ai pas trouvé de meilleur nom que Lopi Affection pour ce pull. Aussi l'ai-je contacté pour lui demander si cela ne la dérangeait pas et elle était au contraire flattée.

Lopi Affection is both for men and women and teenagers and comes into 11 sizes from XXS to 5 or 6X. 5 or 6X because the men size S coincides with the women size M. Unisex but with an optional waist shaping more flattering for women. But what I want to show you is how you can play with the ease: look at us, my 13 years old nephew and I, wearing the exact same sweater, a size XS, but being a completely different fit on each of us!

Lopi Affection est à la fois pour les hommes et les femmes et les adolescents. Il vient en 11 tailles du  XXS au 5 ou 6X. 5 ou 6X parce que la taille homme S correspond à la taille femme M. Un pull unisexe, mais avec une taille marquée en option pour les femmes. Mais ce que je veux vraiment vous montrer c'est comment vous pouvez jouer avec l'aisance: regardez-nous, Óskar mon neveu de 13 ans et moi, nous pouvons mettre tous deux le même pull noir en taille XS mais les portons complètement différemment!

On this picture, we are both wearing the sweater with positive ease: it is still the size XS for Óskar but a size M for me. That's about 10cm/4" ease for each of us (at least at the upper arm but only 5 cm /2" around the bust for me compared to Óskar.

Sur cette photo, nous portons chacun un pull avec une aisance similaire: c'est toujours une taille XS pour Óskar mais une taille M pour moi. ZAvec une aisance de10cm/4" pour tous les deux (en tous cas autour des bras, j'ai un tour de poitrine un peu fort comparé à Óskar.

I personally think the fit of the black sweater is more flattering on my body, despise the fact it has no waist shaping. I have a very curvy back hence the excess of fabric you can see on the picture, so when I make one for me (with very bright colors!), I will knit the XS size again with the women waist shaping (pattern has instructions for it).

Je pense que le pull noir sied mieux à ma silhouette, même si je l'ai tricoté  tout droit, sans taille marquée. Comme je suis très courbée, il y a beaucoup d'excès de fabrique dans le dos, donc lorsque je m'en tricoterai un (avec des couleurs vives!), ce sera à nouveau une taille XS mais avec la taille marquée (indiquée dans les instructions).
