It's always with a lot of excitement that I await for the special Knitting traditions issues of Piecework Magazine. Last Historical knitting issue, January/February 2012, was no exception, especially because I have an article in it about Icelandic shoe inserts along side a colorful pattern of Icelandic inserts.

C'est toujours avec beaucoup d'excitation que j'attends les numéros spécial traditions de tricot du magazine américain Interweave, Piecework Magazine. Le dernier numéro sur le tricot historique, Historical knitting issue, January/February 2012, ne faisait pas exception, d'autant que j'y ai un article à propos des semelles islandaises accompagné d'un modèle de semelle tricotée.

Vetrar tölublaðið er komið út! Einhver ykkar hafa kannski skoðað það á ensku eða frönsku, en það tók svolítinn tíma að koma því út á íslensku líka. Til að fagna íslensku útgáfunni verður happdrætti á Facebook síðu Hélène Magnússon (nánari upplýsingar hér fyrir neðan).

Það eru margar fallegar uppskriftir í nýja tölublaðinu, bæði eftir mig og aðra sjálfstæða hönnuði. Ég kynni líka nýja garnið mitt, Love Story, sem er 100% íslensk, einstaklega mjúk og fíngerð ull.

Eða að prjóna peysu, gangandi yfir Fimmvörðuháls? Allar göngu- ogprjónaferðirnar eru jafnt fyrir íslenskt sem erlent prjónafólk. Vertu með, þetta er óviðjafnanlegt tækifæri til að kynnast ólíkum prjónaaðferðum í hópi fólks frá mismunandi löndum. "Les poupées noires, ce ne sont pas seulement des jouets mais une passerelle pour la tolérance et la compréhension"... pour en savoir plus sur l'histoire et l'importance des poupées noires, allez-donc sur ce site très intéressant. It is very important for children to identify to the dolls they are playing with. Black dolls are more than just toys: they are a tool for tolerance and comprehension. This website is talking about the history and importance of black dolls: it's in French but there are some nice examples of dolls.

J'y aurais des kits de la poupée Olivia mais aussi poupées toutes tricotées. Ce que je préfère, c'est broder leurs yeux et leur bouche et leur donner ainsi leur personnalité. Toutes les poupées que vous faites sont ainsi toutes différentes avec des caractères parfois bien trempés, comme vous pouvez voir sur le blog Bon voyage Theodora! Un fois n'est pas coutume, non pas tricot mais couture pour habiller ces demoiselles, avec des chutes de tissus, des bouts de tee-shirt.

There was a nice interview with me in the Icelandic paper Fréttablaðið last Saturday about the book Knitting around the World by Lela Nargi where I said how important it is to preserve the work of Aðalbjörg Jónsdóttir. Aðalbjörg, who is approaching 95 years old, was so happy with it!

The Icelandic shawl in Cathare land seems to be Knit Spirit 's readers favorite pattern. This is at least what comes through the little giveaway she kindly organized on her blog last week. I like this shawl very much too but the competition is harsh with the other members of the family! Who said lace was only for women? What did you say, you can't knit lace, you don't knit at all? Don't worry the Cathares Shepherds are here for you!

C'est en tout cas ce qui ressort du petit concours qu'elle a organisé sur son blog la semaine dernière. Moi aussi je l'aime bien ce châle mais la concurrence est rude avec les autres membres de la famille! Comme quoi la dentelle ce n'est pas que pour les femmes! Love Story

"Love Story, the soft Icelandic semi-crafted fine lace yarn, is back in stock". This is what I wrote in my last newsletter, but today, two days later, there are only four skeins left !! I spent the past day attaching labels and packaging!! Thank you so much again for all your love, it's very encouraging for the future!

So, what will the future be? Next year I will have more natural sheep colors: brown and black. Those will be unique and limited lots since it's natural colors. I will also have plant dyes colors. Again the lots will be unique even if they look like each other. This is what natural colors and plant dye are all about, being unique, that's why we love them so much... Her is a hint at the color trials I've made this autumn: hope it makes you want to knit with them...lace dresses for example?

"Love Story, le fil dentelle tout doux en laine islandaise est à nouveau là." Voici ce que je vous disais dans ma dernière newsletter, mais aujourd'hui, deux jours plus tard, il ne reste que 4 écheveaux !! J'e passe mes soirées à attacher des étiquettes et empaqueter!!! Merci à nouveau pour votre accueil on ne peut plus chaleureux, c'est très encourageant pour la suite!

La suite c'est l'année prochaine avec plus de couleurs naturelles: des bruns et des noirs en lots uniques puisque ce sont les couleurs naturelles des moutons, non teintes et pas traitées du tout. C'est aussi des teintures naturelles aux plantes, en lots uniques également. Même si les différents lots se ressembleront, ils ne seront jamais complètement identiques: c'est le propre des couleurs et des teintures naturelles mais aussi ce qui fait leur richesse.

Voici quelques essais de couleurs auxquelles je me suis livrée cet automne: pour vous faire un peu envie...des robes en dentelle peut-être?

Le tricot autour du monde

Knitting around the world is the name of the last book from Lela Nargi: a multistranded history of a time-honored tradition that weight 1.566 kg and 264 pages! It includes profiles of historically significant knitters and modern knitters who are using traditional techniques today. A must have for anyone interested in the rich history of knitting. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on Asia and Japan in particular that I was so little aware of.

C'est le nom du tout récent livre de Lela Nargi: un tour du monde du tricot de 1.566 kg et 264 pages! Un ouvrage de référence pour toute tricoteuse ou tricoteur qui s'intéresse à l'histoire du tricot et à leurs traditions particulières partout dans le monde avec des interviews de tricoteurs historiquement influents ou modernes mais utilisant des traditions particulières. J'ai particulièrement aimé l'article sur l'Asie et le Japon en particulier que je ne connaissais guère.

As soon as I arrived in Iceland, I went straight to the hot pot at the swimming pool and then I was just like new to go to to Ístex, the wool manufacturer of the famous lopi, that was holding a party for its 20th anniversary!

As a gift to all the knitters, they offer a new pattern from Védís Jónsdóttir, Afmaeli (it means birthday in Icelandic). Do you like it? The English version will be available on the website and I have the exclusivity of the French version. I will post it as soon as the knitting tour in the magical Icelandic night is over!

Ce qu'il y a de bien avec les voyages de tricot, c'est lorsque des super blogueuses y participent et vous font des super photos et des super postes sur leur blog. C'était le cas lors du voyage Tricoter au Nord de l'Islande lorsque Cécile, LA Facile Cécile, nous a fait toute une série de postes plus alléchants les uns que les autres sur le voyage de tricot. Si cela vous fait très très envie, c'est le moment de s'inscrire au voyage de l'année prochaine!

One nice thing about the knitting tours is when a super blogger is coming along, takes super pictures and writes super blog posts about it! This is what happened during the tour Knitting in the North of Iceland when Cécile, a popular French blogger known as Facile Cécile (easy Cecil), wrote a serie of very inspiring blog posts about the tour. If it makes you want to come to Iceland, now is time to register in the tour next year!

Cécile, le croirez-vous ou non, cela ne fait qu'un an qu'elle tricote, mais elle est très douée. Et j'adore comment elle soigne les finitions et ajoute sa petite touche personnelle à tout. Cécile, pour ceux qui ne la connaisse pas, c'est surtout une super brodeuse. Elle donne des cours en ligne et a écrit plusieurs livres mais j'avoue avoir eu un faible pour "Jardin rêvé, jardin brodé", son tout dernier!

Cécile, believe it or not, has been knitting for only a year, but she's very talented. I love her finitions and the little personal touch she ads to everything she does. Cécile, for those of you who don't know her, is most of all an incredible embroiderer. She has fantastic online tutorials (it really doesn't matter if you don't speak French: the videos will just talk to you) and wrote many books. Her last one is a little jewel (loose translation: The garden I dreamed, the garden I stitched).

Très tôt le matin. Early in the morning before the opening.

Rhinebeck was quite overwhelming. So many sheep, yarns, beautiful colors, people. Of course I spotted right away the Icelandic sheep and the Icelandic yarn. You will hear more from it next year, I promess! At the Cooperative press booth, I also met for the first time Stephannie and Anna, the two designers who published the Raven in snow mittens and the Brennu Njàll shawl in the last Issue 04. Sorry not to show you more!

By the way, Nanako and Smali came with me and made a new friend. Guess who?

Rhinebeck était assez éprouvant: tant de moutons, laine, couleurs incroyables, gens. Bien sûr, j'ai tout de suite repéré le mouton islandais et les fils islandais. Je vous en parlerai l'année prochaine, c'est promis. J'ai aussi rencontré pour la première fois Stephanie et Anna, qui ont publié le modèle de moufles Corbeaux sur neige et le châle Brennu-Njàll. The Knitting tour in the magical Icelandic night in november is fully booked but fortunately the program for the 2012 knitting tours is now online and opened for registration! On the program, the beautiful Knitting tour in the North of Iceland and in March, an exceptional tour in the Icelandic winter in Landmannalaugar; two hiking and knitting tours, the one by the Fimmvorduhals pass and a brand new one with the Eves in the East fjords.

I let you discover the program in peace and I will talk to you about each tour separately in the next following weeks.

The other day, there was a very nice article in Fréttablaðið. It told about the fabulous Hiking and Knitting tour and explained how I knitted a sweater while walking. You don't believe me? Have a look at the pictures!

Un bien joli article dans Fréttablaðið l'autre jour. Il y parle de ce fabuleux tricot-treck par-desssus le col de Fimmvörðuháls et explique comment j'ai tricoté un pull quasiment entier en marchant. Vous ne me croyez pas? Regardez plutôt les photos!

I hold the skein under my armpit, just like in the Old days when no time could be lost and Icelandic men and women where knitting when going from one farm to another or, especially the men, when working around in the fields.

It was much easier than I thought to walk and knit all together because when you look at your knitting or your feet, you look in the same direction. Also, knitting helped me to keep a slow and regular rythme, very important when guiding a group.

On the other hand, knitting a sweater is not something that I would recommend:socks or mittens would be more appropriate. The body was really heavy to knit and I had to knit sitting, as usual, to knit the yoke. The sweater is of course named after Fimmvörðuháls and the pattern will be published next year in a book from US editor Voyageurs Press.

Je tenais la pelote sous l'aisselle, tout comme il était commun en Islande aux siècles passés et qu'on n'avait pas de temps à perdre en visite d'une ferme à l'autre ou, les hommes en particulier, en travaillant autour de la ferme.

Tricoter en marchant, c'est bien plus facile que je ne pensais car on regarde ses pieds et son tricot en même temps. Et pour dire le vrai, cela m'a aidé à garder une cadence lente et régulière, important lorqu'on guide.

En revanche je conseillerais un plus petit projet qu'un pull, comme des chaussettes ou des gants: le corps était bien lourd à tricoter, et l'encolure je l'ai tricoté assise comme d'habitude! Le pull porte bien sûr le nom de Fimmvörduháls et le modèle sera publié dans un livre de Voyageurs Press, un éditeur américain, l'année prochaine.

Voici Olga, prêt à couper, dans un joli camaïeux de moutarde, des coloris très difficiles à rendre en photos! Les mailles de la capuche sont toujours en attente sur l'aiguille circulaire. Seules les 2 mailles envers à couper ont été rabattues.
Here is Olga, ready to cut. The mustard color is not very easy to photograph but very nice in real life. At that point, the stitches form the hood are still on the needle, only the 2 purled stitches (steek) were bind off.

Une petite couture sur un côté des mailles envers (voir précédent tuto): je vous la montre en travaillant sur l'endroit du travail mais c'est plus simple de travailler sur l'envers. La couture va du haut de la capuche...

A seam on each side of the purled stitches (see previous tutorial): I show it to you first on the right side of the work but I find it easier to sew on the wrong side. The seam goes from the top of the hood...

...tout en bas du pull.
...all the way down.

Faites les deux coutures du même côté: c'est juste pour vous montrer la couture de l'autre côté sur l'envers du travail (on voit mieux où placer la couture ainsi).
Please have rather the seams on the same side: this is only to show you how to make a seam on the other side, the wrong side ( it's easier to see the stitches to sew) .

Astuce: lorsque vous travaillez le motif, tricotez les mailles envers à couper (en bleu sur la photo) en mettant le fil non en usage devant (rouge sur la photo), au lieu de le laisser flotter derrière, ainsi vous verrez bien les mailles à couper sur l'envers.
Tip: when working the pattern, knit the purled stitches to steek (in blue on the picture) with the yarn-not-in-use (in red) on the front of your work, instead of the back. This way, the floats won't hide the stitches when you cut from the wrong side.

On lave généralement son tricot à ce niveau là mais pas Olga parce que les mailles de la capuche sont toujours en attente sur l'aiguille. On coupe entre les deux coutures: normalement c'est mieux de choisir un fil de même couleur que le tricot, mais comme c'est un tuto je voulais le faire ressortir!
You usually wash your sweater at this point but not here of course because of the hood stiches still on the needle.Cut between the seams. Normally I would sew with a thread of same color than the yarn, but this is a tutorial and I wanted it to show!

On assemble ensuite les mailles de la capuche avec une couture invisible (grafting), ainsi que les mailles des aisselles.
Graft the top of the hood and the underarms.

On fait un tour de mailles serrées au crochet tout autour du pull et de la capuche, deux mailles sur trois, pour ne pas allonger les bords.
Crochet along the edges and around the hood, 2 sts out of 3, otherwise the edges will be elongated.

Les petits bouts de laine qui dépassaient sont pris dans le bord de crochet. S'il en dépasse encore, ils disparaitront après lavage du pull (à la main en eau tiède avec de l'après-shampoing pour assouplir la laine). J'aime aussi presser mes pulls à la patte-mouille: fer chaud et linge humide. Attention toutefois à ne pas trop aplatir les mailles (méthode non recommandée pour les cables et autres points texturés).

The bits of yarn will be hidden in the crocheted edge for the biggest part and will felt with the fabric after washing (by hand with luke warm water and wool soap and even conditionner); I also like to iron my sweaters with a wet cloth in between the iron and the fabric. this method isn't good though for cables or textured stitches.

Si après lavage/pressage, des bouts de laine dépassaient malgré tout:

- ceux au niveau du corps seront de toute façon dissimulés sous la fermeture éclair

- coupez sans crainte ceux autour de la capuche ou cousez un ruban.
After washing, there might still be some bits of wool coming out of the crocheted edge:
- those from the body will be hidden under the zipper
- trim without fear those around the hood or sew a nice ribbon

Il ne reste plus qu'à poser la fermeture éclair, en faisant bien attention de ne pas étirer les bords et en positionnant bien les motifs face à face, sinon, ça gondole. désolée pas de photos, j'étais dans la voiture... j'en ajouterai lors du prochain Olga (un bleu).
Now you just have to sew the zipper on: make sure not to stretch the edges and to align the motifs, otherwise it will crinkle. Sorry no pictures, I sew it in the car... I'll add pictures with next Olga (a blue one).

You may have noticed lately that the kits of Theodora and her friends for sale on the website don't include the instructions anymore that have to be bought separately. The reason is simple: so many of you wanted to knit more than one doll or set of clothes and it didn't seem fair that you would pay twice, three times or more for the same pattern.

But why are the kits so popular? My guess is that the Icelandic wool makes it magical: the carded wool stuffing is so much better than any polyester one, it makes a firm doll that won't get floppy with time and play; because of the unique characteristics of the Icelandic yarn, water repellent and dirt repellent, the dolls stay beautiful and just like new even after many months playing with them!

Regardez, touchez, sentez: des toisons des 4 coins de l'Europe et des créations magnifiquement mises en valeur. J'ai adoré mon pull négligemment jeté sur les épaules d'une statue... Je n'ai vraiment pas regretté d'avoir fait le chemin jusque Gap pour la voir cette exposition. En plus j'étais fort bien accompagnée par la crocheteuse Sylvie de chezplum.com et la fileuse Alice et puis j'ai pu voir mes deux mignonnes nièces! L'exposition dure jusque fin septembre et le catalogue peut être commandé ici.

Look, touch, smell: wool samples from the four corners of Europe and magnificent designs wonderfully set up. I loved how my sweater was dropped around the shoulders of a statute. I'm so happy I did all the travel to Gap. Plus I had jolly fellow knitters with me, Sylvie the crocheter from chezplum.com and Alice the spinner. And then I could visit my two sweet little nieces! The exhibition stays until end of September and the wonderful catalogue can be ordered here.

Our summer tours are now fully booked and I'm very happy to continue my collaboration with the Icelandic Mountain Guides and be able to share with you once again my genuine interest in the Icelandic knitting heritage along with my love of Icelandic nature.

This new tour, Knitting in the Magical Icelandic Night, from November 3rd to 7th, is truly a magical combination of Icelandic knitting, amazing nature and lights and culture. Going to Iceland in November is a different experience and my mother's preferred time to visit me! Enjoy some pictures and go and check it more thoroughly on the website! The knitting part is just as exciting!

Nos voyages d'été sont désormais complets et je suis très contente de continuer ma collaboration avec les Guides de montagne islandais et de pouvoir à nouveau partager avec vous ma passion pour les traditions de tricot d'Islande ainsi que pour l'Islande tout court.

If you missed the exhibition "Wools of Europe" that presented a hundred of European wool breed along wonderful designs made with the wool, here is a new opportunity: the exhibition is travelling and will be at the Musée Museum départemental de Gap in France from June 19th until September 28th, 2011. The official opening will be on July, 1st.

Icelandic lace shawls usually display some very simple motif in the body. A very popular one is the so called Spider lace stitch pattern., sometimes referred to as a Lattice lace pattern. "Þríhyrnur og langsjöl" - Three-cornered and long shawls-, the book and reference on Icelandic lace shawls, after Sigríður Halldórsdóttir -, you will find upp to 9 shawls using this motif!

Les châles de dentelle islandais utilisent des motis très simples. Le plus populaire est probablement le motif "araignée". Dans le livre "Þríhyrnur og langsjöl" - Triangles et long châles -, la référence en matière de châles islandais par Sigríður Halldórsdóttir, vous trouverez 9 châles utilisant ce motif!

The two traditional shawls published on The Icelandic Knitter are no exception: the Spider motif is worked as an allover pattern in the Modern Icelandic Shawl whereas it displays broken lines in the Icelandic Spring Shawl.

Icelandic shawls often had a very lacy border, probably inspired by doilies. The Spring shawl keeps it extremely simple and easy but no less effective.

Les châles islandais ont souvent une bordure en dentelle plus élaborée, probablement inspirée des napperons. Celle du Châle de printemps est d'une simplicité extrème mais non moins effective.

The use of colors is probably the most obvious characteristics of Icelandic lace shawls: it allowed to show off all the beautiful colors and the gradations both in the natural colors of the sheep and in the dyed Icelandic wool. Undulating motifs are also a favorite to show off the colors better.

L'utilisation des couleurs est probablement la caractéristique la plus évidente des châles islandais: c'est qu'il s'agit de tirer parti des dégradés dans les couleurs naturelles extrêmement variées des moutons, et aussi les laines teintes. Les motifs ondulatoires sont ainsi très populaires aussi pour les mettre en valeur.

Many Icelandic shawls are shaped in a way that they curve. The Spring shawl however is exaggerating the curve quite a lot and will not just sit right but go all around the shoulders.

Beaucoup de châles islandais ont une forme un peu incurvée afin de tenir bien sur les épaules. Le Châle de printemps exagère cette courbe et enroule les épaules plus qu'il ne s'y tient simplement.

You will find there really interesting articles about Iceland, for example on the Icelandic tolkien, just have a look at the editorial. See there is even some knitting! Un week end de tricot à Paris

Difficult to spend a week-end in Paris without stoping at Le Comptoir...

Difficile de passer un week-end à Paris sans passer par Le Comptoir...

...and meeting with another ... lawyer: well, not anymore!

...et rencontrer une ancienne consoeur: et oui le droit mène à tout!

On Sunday, I was teaching an Icelandic intarsia workshop and a lopi sweater workshop at the super cute Atelier de Claire, alias Les bricolos du lundi. All the participants were really nice and there were many bloggers among them, such as Odd's en ends, Folles Bobines, Côté Passions, Notre univers, Djaj, or Le P'tit Atelier de Marguerite!

Dimanche, j'enseignais des ateliers de jacquard islandais et de pull lopi islandais dans le super mignon Atelier de Claire, alias Les bricolos du lundi. Toutes les paticipantes étaient très appliquées et beacoup de bloggeuses parmi elles, comme Odd's en ends, Folles Bobines, Côté Passions, Notre univers, Djaj, or Le P'tit Atelier de Marguerite!

Apéro tricot in Paris

Knitting in the round with the Icelandic unspun lopi while having dry fish, rotten shark and Black Death (Brennivin, sort of Icelandic aquavit)! Pictures speak by themselves! It was in café Chéri(e), a popular bar in Paris, and it was part of the program of the Air d'Islande festival, the Icelandic Cultural Festival in Paris.

Tricoter en rond avec de la laine mêche islandaise lopi, poisson séché, requin faisandé - pourri - et Mort Noire (Brennivin, uen espèce d'aquavit islandais)! Les photos parlent d'elles-mêmes. C'était au café Chéri(e), un bar populaire, et c'était au programme du Festival Air d'Islande à Paris.

Gasp! It's strong! C'est fort!
