Il est rentré ! It returned!

Retour d´Islande (return from Iceland) is out! The illustrations by Charline are so beautiful that it really doesn´t matter if you don´t understand French. Actually you can listen to the free bonus audio on ABC Melody, the editors´site: it´so beautiful with bubbling mold, and blowing wind. And the flute music is from my husband´s Icelandic grand-father! Go and listen to it here and order the book here too!

There are even Icelanders, knitting in the round on a circular needle, using the continental method: isn´t it just well documented?

Look at my favorite shoes-inserts with the Hammer rose motif! the notif is all over my blog too!
Arent´they beautiful the Icelandic sheeps with their horns and their long hairs to make the beautiful Icelnadic yarn?

Knitting and Crochet Blog week - Day 5: where

Where do you like to indulge in your craft? Is your favourite arm chair your little knitting cubby area, or do you prefer to ‘knit in public’? Do you like to crochet in the great outdoors, perhaps, or knit in the bath, or at the pub?
This one is easy: everywhere and anywhere. De facto, in the sofa in the evening, at the play-ground with the girls in the afternoon when the weather is good. Travelling, in the plane, the train, the car or the bus. Anywhere where you have to wait more than 5 mn (doctors, moovie ads, airports lines, etc...)

Knitting and Crochet Blog week - Day 3

Knitting and Crochet Blog week - Day 3: Write about a knitter whose work (whether because of project choice, photography, styling, scale of projects, stash, etc) you enjoy. If they have an enjoyable blog, you might find it a good opportunity to send a smile their way.

This is a really tough question. There are son many great knitters whose work I find inspiring. Solveig Hisdal and her book Poetry in stitches is among my favourite. I have it in Icelandic, called "Ljóð í lykkjum". I also enjoy to see how her designs are being adapted between craft and industry and how her handknit collection relates to the machine knit collection, "fair made" in the Norwegian Oleana factory.

See you tomorrow with Eskimini Knits and her Knitting and Crochet Blog week - Day 4 and special techniques yet to learn.

On French TV, the other day, there was the most hilarious compilation on how the Icelandic eruptive glacier was pronounced by journalists. So I just try to give you a sens for it (but myEmglish pronounciation si not perfect either!)
Eyja, meaning island, is pronounced a bit like: ey hya
Fjalla, meaning mountain, is pronounced: fiat (like the car) and la
Jökull, meaning glacier, is pronounced: yeu (like yey without the ey but a instead like in amazing whitout the mazing: does it make sens?) ku and then a t following by a l at the end.
You can see more fantastic pictures here.

Knitting and Crochet Blog week - Day 2

Knitting and Crochet Blog week, day 2 : Blog about a pattern or project which you aspire to. Whether it happens to be because the skills needed are ones which you have not yet acquired, or just because it seems like a huge undertaking of time and dedication, most people feel they still have something to aspire to in their craft. If you don’t feel like you have any left of the mountain of learning yet to climb, say so!

I´m currently compiling documents for on a new book project, about a wonderful knitter, Aðalbjörg Jónsdóttir, 93 years old today, who was making the most amazing lace dresses ever and who is herself an amazing woman. See my previous post. Among all the dresses, one I find especially challenging, is a wonderful dress knitted all in the biais, with change of needles sizes giving it its flared shape.

Knitting and Crochet Blog week - Day 1: starting out

I´m taking part in the Knitting and Crochet Blog week , starting today: How and when did you begin knitting/crocheting? was it a skill passed down through generations of your family, or something you learned from Knitting For Dummies? What or who made you pick up the needles/hook for the first time? Was it the celebrity knitting ‘trend’ or your great aunt Hilda?

I have always liked all sorts of handwork, coming from a family of handy people. When the weather wouldn´t allow my father to work on the sailor boat he had designed, he would take out the sewing machine and make the most beautiful and politically uncorrect dresses for my stepmother. When I was about seven years old, I asked my mother to teach me how to knit. My knitting was full of inexplicable holes and as the rows progressed, the stitches decreased in number and were so tight that I could no longer move the needles. It was so frustrating... But I was determined to get it. So on day, just on my own, I cast on 10 stitches and counted and recounted at every row, row after row, until I finally made progress. After four meters, I knew how to knit. After a few more meters I mastered the purl stitches, the yarns overs , the decreases and the increases, I started to knit for my dolls: bags and blankets, a green dress, a red and white flamenco dress. I don´t remember learning how to crochet. I just remember it was always a favourite for the finishing. As a teenager, my knitting was of great help as if trying not to fit in. Knitting made me different. I systematically presented myself at parties with my knitting, by means of opposition, amused by the comments I would get about looking like a grand-mother, which I disdainfully regarded. I remember knitting an Aran sweater for my boyfriend in the middle of a disco. I knitted only in public.

On my needles ... Sur mes aiguilles

I know it often doesn´t look like that, but when I´m away (manage to escape from) my computer, I do knit a bit. Not as much as I´d like, though. Here are my latest projects:

Three Olga sweaters waiting to be finished. Had to knit two in browns because Miss Sylvía didn´t like my first color sheme (she could have said it before I reached the hood, though...). The lilac Olga is for little Olga, Olga´s latest great-grand child, lilac being Olga´s favourite color. I´m working on the pattern (on the computer...).

Revisited granny squares with Icelandic intarsia. A project for Knitpicks, using their Swish Worsted Yarn, a soft superwah merino.

A secret pair of socks, to be published in a wonderful book by Voyageurs Press. Deadline is getting closed and I have to hurry!

In the car, I knitted really quick a new pair of mittens for Théa who had lost hers : it´s still cold in the mornings bicycling to school. It would nave been nice to have more colors available, but at least, they are a perfect fit on her hands. May be I embellish them with a bit of embroidery later...

Tea time

L´heure du thé

It´s tea time and I have a tea cozy pattern published in latest Yarn Forward British magazine. I didn´t get the magazine yet but I can show you some pictures, not the best, I took before I sent the samples over.

This tea cosy was the perfect occasion for me to talk about my book and the old technique of Icelandic intarsia, mostly seen in old Icelandic inserts in shoes from the past centuries. The tea cosy is, in fact, constructed almost exactly like a pair of inserts.

The tea cozy is knitted in garter stitch as most inserts were: this ensured that a great deal of air was captured between the stitches, which made them warmer. But, hey, I want my tea cold!

It´s not fair, we can´t drink tea! Mum doesn´t allow!
C´est pas juste, on n´a pas droit de boire de thé! Maman veut pas!

Pattern won´t be available on my website before 6 months, but I can, at least, let you have the recipe of the Icelandic pancakes:
In the spirit of the old inserts (using yarn left overs) and to go with the hot tea, here is a recipe for traditional Icelandic pancakes, called lummur, main ingredient being whatever is left of the morning’s oatmeal porridge. Rice pudding can also be used. When I was given the recipe, I was told to “blend a little bit of everything altogether”. This is best with raisins, I think. Mix together about 3 cups oatmeal porridge (or 1 cup oatmeal soaked in 1 cup milk/water overnight, raisins optional), about 2 tablespoons of flour, 1 egg, a little salt, sugar optional and to taste. Add milk until the batter is reasonably thick to pour. Cook on a frying pan with a little bit of butter over medium heat. Using a tablespoon, pour batter in pan to form small round pancakes. Brown on one side and turn to cook the other side. Recipe makes about 20-25 lummur.

Did you see the cover girl with the Icelandic lopi dress from Harpa Jónsdóttir?

Vaudou knitting / Tricot vaudou

I don´t know about you, but I don´t seem to be able to knit anything without some of my hairs getting caught into the stitches.

Fortunately, I give my handknits to people I like and I don´t think they will use my hair to cast a bad spell on me...

Thank you for all your nice comments on my Flag pattern. I´m glad you like it. Soon in French too, possibly in Icelandic as well.
